The explanations I've read -- "large training database", "probabilistic association of phrases and sentences" -- doesn't answer the question of where the factual statements originate. "Massive knowledge aggregator" seems like a better description than "natural language chat generator"; but what the sources are from which ChatGPT harvests relevant facts relevant to the question posed in the prompt is still pretty mysterious to me. And various articles insist on 2 points: that the agent does not search the web (like a search program), and that its knowledge base cuts off in 2021. But in at least one of the answers provided in my blog post, the material included in the response was not available at all until 10/22.
Dan Littlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15953897221283103880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058766287077382431.post-7142562040979336202023-01-27T16:28:53.434-05:002023-01-27T16:28:53.434-05:00I think the Peirce responses leave a lot to be des...I think the Peirce responses leave a lot to be desired. The first one opens with a general statement about the scientific method, nothing specific to Peirce, and the second one talks about a "willingness" to doubt established beliefs - not really Peirce's understanding of the role of doubt, which happens whether you're willing or not, and it doesn't matter if the belief is scientifically established or not.

Still, would an undergrad get a pretty good grade for this? I guess so, you wouldn't expect detailed conceptual accuracy from them. I think the bot is a threat to education for many reasons. But since that is already threatened in so many ways this just makes things a little worse.Tony Altermanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15522957493482413120noreply@blogger.com
