Even the college bound need to learn -- how to cook, how to use a screw driver, fix your computer. The stigmatization of the industrial arts has got to stop and the only way to do that is to require everyone to study them to some degree: concrete, welding, electricity, wood, plastic, dirt. It works because it is resource intensive: support the teachers, support the students in school, support the families outside of school. That is what is needed.

We could also start earlier. There is no question that preschool programs are more effective than intervention at high school or middle school. See this study as just one of many. We could start even earlier, before preschool.Burtnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4058766287077382431.post-53961605460027808272011-05-06T02:51:11.530-04:002011-05-06T02:51:11.530-04:00Thank you for this post. I dropped out back in 1997 and am will be wrapping up my undergraduate degree in economics and philosophy in about a year or so... I'm 30.

Don't get me wrong. I love my life and have a great (union) job loading trucks.

But loading trucks is not my full potential. There are millions like me. Imagine how much economic potential is being wasted...Jim Nicholshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10186874417708497628noreply@blogger.com
